Geography & Natural Studies

Cultural Geography focuses on the connection between humans and their environment. Students begin by learning about the many countries in the world - their names, locations, and flags. Students associate human activities with geographic characteristics, such as denser population along coasts. In the Upper Elementary years, students deepen this association by learning how countries utilize natural resources, conduct commerce, and develop political systems. In addition, students learn about mapping, types of maps, and navigation.

The Physical Geography curriculum delves into the three components of our planet: the atmosphere, the lithosphere, and the hydrosphere. From weather to tectonic plates to ocean currents, students gain an understanding of the natural systems, processes, and forces that have shaped and continue to shape our planet.

The study of Astronomy in the elementary years helps students position themselves in the universe. As they investigate stars, planets, and black holes, students are filled with an appreciation not only for the vastness of our universe, but for its many wonders and the interconnectedness of it all.

Another area studied in the elementary years is Ecology. Beginning with the exploration of biomes, the study of ecology brings students to realize the connection between earth, plants, animals, and humans. Students learn to respect the delicate balance of nature, discover the importance of each component within an ecosystem, and develop a sense of responsibility towards earth and its inhabitants.
